0lumbosacral%20back%20pain.%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20Design%3A%5Cu2002%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20Computer%5Cu2010aided%20systematic%20literature%20search%20of%20MEDLINE%20and%20the%20Cochrane%20collaboration%20for%20prospective%20clinical%20trials%20on%20adults%20with%20low%20back%20pain%20in%20the%20English%20literature%20from%201975%20to%20October%202005.%20Methodologic%20quality%20for%20each%20study%20was%20assessed.%20Studies%20were%20included%20if%20the%20intervention%20group%20received%20motorized%20spinal%20decompression%20and%20the%20comparison%20group%20received%20sham%20or%20another%20type%20of%20nonsurgical%20treatment.%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20Results%3A%5Cu2002%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20Data%20from%2010%20studies%20were%20fully%20analyzed.%20Seven%20studies%20were%20randomized%20controlled%20trials%20using%20various%20apparatus%20types.%20Because%20of%20this%20low%20number%2C%20we%20also%20analyzed%20three%20nonrandomized%20case%20series%20studies%20of%20spinal%20decompression%20systems.%20As%20the%20overall%20quality%20of%20studies%20was%20low%20and%20the%20patient%20groups%20heterogeneous%2C%20a%20meta%5Cu2010analysis%20was%20not%20appropriate%20and%20a%20qualitative%20review%20was%20undertaken.%20Sample%20sizes%20averaged%20121%20patients%20%28range%2027%5Cu2013292%29%2C%20with%20six%20of%20the%20seven%20randomized%20studies%20reporting%20no%20difference%20with%20motorized%20spinal%20decompression%20and%20one%20study%20reporting%20reduced%20pain%20but%20not%20disability.%20The%20three%20unrandomized%20studies%20%28no%20control%20group%29%20of%20motorized%20spinal%20decompression%20found%20a%2077%25%20to%2086%25%20reduction%20in%20pain.%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20Conclusions%3A%5Cu2002%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20These%20data%20suggest%20that%20the%20efficacy%20of%20spinal%20decompression%20achieved%20with%20motorized%20traction%20for%20chronic%20discogenic%20low%20back%20pain%20remains%20unproved.%20This%20may%20be%2C%20in%20part%2C%20due%20to%20heterogeneous%20patient%20groups%20and%20the%20difficulties%20involved%20in%20properly%20blinding%20patients%20to%20the%20mechanical%20pulling%20mechanism.%20Scientifically%20more%20rigorous%20studies%20with%20better%20randomization%2C%20control%20groups%2C%20and%20standardized%20outcome%20measures%20are%20needed%20to%20overcome%20the%20limitations%20of%20past%20studies.%22%2C%22date%22%3A%2209%5C%2F2006%22%2C%22language%22%3A%22en%22%2C%22DOI%22%3A%2210.1111%5C%2Fj.1533-2500.2006.00082.x%22%2C%22ISSN%22%3A%221530-7085%2C%201533-2500%22%2C%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%5C%2F%5C%2Fonlinelibrary.wiley.com%5C%2Fdoi%5C%2F10.1111%5C%2Fj.1533-2500.2006.00082.x%22%2C%22collections%22%3A%5B%2258RNK2VG%22%2C%224JM8EKA5%22%5D%2C%22dateModified%22%3A%222024-12-13T15%3A28%3A25Z%22%7D%7D%5D%7D
